Martyn Smith from Fleet is embarking on an extraordinary journey in 2025 to give back to the NHS
Martyn Smith (63) from Fleet, a governor for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is embarking on an extraordinary journey to give back to the NHS, the institution he credits with saving his life. Between 1st January and 31st December 2025, Martyn will complete 52 marathons (one medley a week)—equivalent to 2.5 million steps—and swim 250 km, all with the aim of raising £25,000 for Brighterway, the NHS charity supporting Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare.
Kicking off his rigorous training regime this week, Martyn is receiving support from the lifeguards and management team at Everyone Active in Fleet, Hampshire. This remarkable endeavour marks a deeply personal milestone: the 10th anniversary of his recovery from two life-changing strokes in 2015 that left him unable to stand, walk, or talk.
“Ten years ago, I was at my lowest, unable to move, talk, or function,” Martyn reflects. “Yet here I am, setting a goal of completing 52 marathons and swimming 250 km. For me, it’s about proving to myself and others that recovery is possible and giving back to the NHS for saving my life.”
A Personal Journey of Recovery and Resilience
Martyn, a devoted husband, father to three adult children, and grandfather of two, draws strength from his family and community. After surviving his strokes, he vividly recalls hearing Queen’s “We Will Rock You” during life-saving surgery to insert a stent. “I thought, ‘If I make it, I have to live differently, and I have to give back,’” he shares.
His challenge is more than a physical test; it’s a celebration of resilience and an opportunity to fund vital projects through Brighterway that enhance patient care and staff well-being across the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare system.
Brighterway: Empowering the NHS and Inspiring Communities
Brighterway, the charity partner for Martyn’s challenge, is proud to champion his extraordinary efforts. By funding initiatives that go beyond standard NHS budgets, Brighterway supports patients and healthcare staff with projects that improve comfort, wellness, and outcomes.
“Martyn’s dedication embodies the spirit of Brighterway,” says Phil Pride, Marketing Manager for Brighterway. “His journey inspires our community to come together to make a meaningful difference for NHS staff and patients.”
An Invitation to Join the Journey
Starting 1st January 2025, Martyn invites patients, NHS staff, and the Hampshire community to join him in monthly walks and swimming events at NHS and Everyone Active sites. Designed to be inclusive, these events welcome everyone—patients, carers, families, and staff—to walk, swim, or cheer him on.
“I want to give everyone the chance to be part of this journey,” Martyn says. “When we walk or swim together, it creates a bond and reminds us why we’re doing this—to support each other and the NHS.”
All funds raised will go directly to Brighterway to support initiatives within Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust. From patient comfort projects to health and wellness programs for NHS staff, every donation will have a tangible impact.
